I am going to make it clear here, I am not jumping into the bandwagon and join in the fray with my venomous remarks.
Although the final judgement (I prefer this better than the word ‘decision’) would be out in April, it is obvious that Ah Gong is shooting anything that stands in the way. The proposal for a referendum has been turned down. Neither was the proposal for a delay in decision allowed. FACTS – Families against Casino Threat in Singapore – carries more than 27, 473 signatories, the figure until 7.30pm yesterday, would have no effect from my point of view. All the petitions and voices to the higher authorities would be brushed off as usual.
Opposition voices deemed that by allowing the casino, more of such Tampines tragedies would occur.
---
Why not I put it in another perspective? Using another example to put my point across, erm… it is a little usual to use that as an example but nevertheless, the point is clear cut enough.
We know what condoms are for. The invention or existence of condoms have in one way or the other changed the way modern society goes around. The condom is like the double-edge sword. It has saved millions from infections, spread by sexual intercourse. But likewise the existence of the condom has provided a ‘safety’ mindset for the men with philandering ways who seek pleasure in paid sex.
The inventor of the condom, of course, did not take into account that men would take advantage of such ‘safety’ feature for their indulgences. His original motive was to save lives, but it all boils down to how the item is handled.
Quote – Fire is a good servant, but a bad master.
Likewise the casino is only an avenue for entertainment; it is after all the men and women who are flocking there for
-amusement or,
-try their luck or,
-strike it rich etc etc.
Thus the issue turns back to whether or not the casino is going to be built or not, it is the human greediness we have to overcome.
The casino is just but hardware, without the addicted gamblers, the casino is nothing but a shell. By imposing curbs and restrictions would only hinder the physical presence of the human gambler. He could then turn to online casinos and other venues of gambling to satisfy his desire for gambling.
If any of the skool-lahs is reading this, well, given his intellect and capability (if he have any), he would look at another way of resolving the conflict.
